Choosing an agency is mostly about reducing surprises. Here is the order we would work in.
1. Confirm the Shopify work is real
Ask for stores they built and open them. Check that each one actually runs on Shopify, and that the agency did more than a small tweak. A short list of genuine projects beats a long list of logos.
2. Look for relevant experience
A store that sells fashion has different needs from one that sells B2B parts. Ask for a project close to yours in size, catalogue and market, and ask what went wrong on it and how it was fixed.
3. Read ratings with their dates
Ratings on Google, Clutch and GoodFirms are useful when you can see how many reviews sit behind them and when they were last looked at. A high score from three reviews tells you less than a steady score from sixty.
4. Get comparable quotes
Ask each agency to quote the same scope in writing. Compare what is included: design, theme customisation, app setup, data migration, testing, training and support after launch.
5. Talk to the people doing the work
Ask who will actually build your store, how updates are shared, and who you contact when something breaks after launch.
Warning signs
- Portfolio stores that do not run on Shopify.
- No named team members or case contacts.
- A fixed price offered before anyone has seen your catalogue.
- Pressure to sign quickly.
